SUR VS SOUS 🤔 WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? HOW TO USE THEM?

If you’re learning french, you probably already came across these prepositions and you wonder “What’s the difference?” or “How to use them properly?”.

🟣 Let me explain very simply and quickly in this article!

If you translate in English, it roughly gives this:

Sur = On, On top of   /   Sous = Under, Below, Beneath

⚠️ But let's see in french in which context to use them… ⤵️

Sur = is used to refer about something that is "on top" of something else, it's in contact with it.

Sous = is used to refer about something that is "below" or "under" something else, and is also in contact with it.

🟢 Let’s see some examples:

1️⃣ Le chat dort sur la couverture = The cat is sleeping on the blanket

2️⃣ Le chien dort sous la couverture = The dog is sleeping under the blanket

3️⃣ J'ai rangé les produits ménagers sous l'évier de la cuisine = I stored household products under the kitchen sink

4️⃣ Assieds-toi sur le canapé, je reviens vite ! = Sit down on the couch, I'll be right back!

5️⃣ J'étais sur l'ordinateur quand tu as sonné à la porte = I was on the computer when you rang the doorbell

6️⃣ Ils ont trouvé un cafard sous le meuble = They found a cockroach under the furniture

7️⃣ Il y a énormément de livres sur l'étagère dans le salon = There's a lot of books on the shelf in the living room

8️⃣ C'est sous la surface de l'eau = It's under/beneath/underneath the surface of the water

Et voilà ! 👏 Now you're all set to know how it works and to use them without making any mistake again! 😊
